there should really be a cli version of gedit. That way !linux n00bs that find themselves at a prompt could still get to a text editor. I'm not sure what to check (gnome could be running on another tty), but I imagine is could be done.

dandartA distro is a distro. The fact most have !gnu + !linux in them doesn't MAKE them gnu and linux. It makes it what it's called.
